Guidelines for Low-Cost Incineration Systems

This semester project examines low-cost incineration as a strategy for solid waste management in low-income countries, where inadequate waste treatment poses environmental and public health risks. Three incinerator technologies - De Montfort incinerators, barrel incinerators, and open pit burning - are compared in terms of construction cost, operational efficiency, emissions, and maintenance. The study also investigates bottom ash management options, including stabilization, landfilling, and recycling for construction materials, and evaluates the feasibility of recovering energy from incineration heat. Results show that De Montfort incinerators provide the most controlled combustion and lowest emissions, making them the safest low-cost option, although open pits remain widespread due to their minimal cost and simplicity. The project concludes with context-specific recommendations balancing environmental protection, public health, and economic constraints.
