Cryogenic Moderator System for the European Spallation Source

Liquid-hydrogen cryostat design and factory-acceptance-test preparation

At Technische Universität Dresden I worked on the Cryogenic Moderator System for the European Spallation Source (ESS) — the liquid-hydrogen system that cools the neutron moderators of what is set to be the world’s most powerful spallation source. My work spanned thermal calculations, equipment procurement, control-system design, and the preparation of factory acceptance tests for the complete cryostat and its components, including the liquid-hydrogen pumps. The design focused on a reliable, redundant pressure-control mechanism able to handle the variable neutron heat load, applying APEX safety standards. The rendering shows the cryogenic cold box developed for the system.
