Low-cost biogas flow and composition sensing

Thermal-anemometry monitoring for digesters — dMRV and carbon offsetting (patent pending)

At ETH Zürich’s Global Health Engineering group I lead the biogas-sensing project: a low-cost, remote-monitoring device that measures the flow, composition and overpressure of biogas produced in household and community digesters. Based on thermal anemometry, it is designed for digital monitoring, reporting and verification (dMRV) so that biogas cooking can be credibly used for carbon offsetting in low- and middle-income countries. The work is the subject of a pending European patent (EP25224614, filed December 2025) and is being piloted in Kenya, developed with a team of research assistants and several of the student theses shown here.
